Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Shway) has been around for over five thousand years. Its original objective has always remained the same; to assist individuals in creating environments that support their needs, desires and overall well-being. The Feng Shui of our surroundings creates a set of opportunities for better or for worse which ultimately determines and shapes the quality and directions of our lives. The energy force (chi‘) that exists around us in our environment also exists within us. It permeates and surrounds all living things.
That is why Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and the Martial Arts are so effective and have been passed down from generation to generation for over 5000 years. All of these modalities restoring energy to the human environment. The strength of our health, our level of motivation, our ability to express ourselves, be creative, open our hearts, stimulate our intellect, generate money, attract relationships are all influenced by the in explicable power of chi’. The strength, the quality and the balance of chi’ that exists within us is the most important factor that determines the quality of our life and the opportunities that we draw to us. To harmoniously rebalance the Feng Shui in our lives we first have to work on restoring the Feng Shui in our homes, workplaces and communities. Let's get started today…

What has become of the stage on which we play out our lives? We spend our working days perched on plastic propped up by scaffolds of glass and steel and immersed in the silent and invisible threat of electromagnetic radiation. We go home greeted by our garage. It is as if we have been taken hostage by our car living life in the fast lane never stopping to notice that the flowers at the front door have died. Then it’s past the bathroom and clothes piled high in the laundry room and without the slightest hint of a welcome we’re wondering which activity needs our attention first. The kitchen is next; how many messages on the answering machine? What’s for dinner? We drop our belongings on the dining table so that when dinner is ready the only place to eat is in front of the TV. Our daily path is full of noise cluttered with debris. Where is there a resting place?
The bedroom perhaps; this has become a modern complex filled with televisions, boxes stored under the bed, exercise equipment, dimmers and alarms. We go to sleep on fast forward and it’s no wonder we have trouble getting up in the morning. We no longer have a place to experience the natural rhythm of action and rest that ebbs and flows with the hours of the day. Our design and technology have come between us and the Earth and we have lost direct touch with the experience of being alive. We are a natural product of this earth like buds out of branches and butterflies out of cocoons. We are intelligent beings fruits of an intelligent earth nourished by an intelligent system of energy. The Chinese call it Ch’i, the force that links man to the patterns of Heaven and Earth and we have learned to tune it out. Our knowledge has been profoundly biased by a culture that “thinks apart” the world. We split mind from body consciousness from matter and the individual from community. In turn we build structures that suck the life from us as fast and effectively as Frankenstein funneled it into his creature. The result is the same” mayhem…
Feng Shui teaches us that we need places that are richly human where we experience openness and trust, honest talking and attentive listening, places that hold our memories and celebrate our successes. Places that offer comfort and open our eyes to possibility. Places where strangers are welcomed and novel ideas pursued.
For today’s designer the work of Feng Shui is to create a gathering place for the goodness of life and to regulate the flow of life’s difficulties. We have all felt uncomfortable upon entering a room and so we are familiar with our direct knowing. We may or may not know the reason for what we are feeling but the sensation is real. It is my job as a Feng Shui Practitioner to uncover these reasons and to redirect the flow of energy.
We must trust what we cannot see and acknowledge that there is more than we can know with our intellect. We must honor and act upon our intuition. Failing to do so it is possible to place, design, furnish or ventilate a building badly sending home those who use it with asthma, nausea and lethargy. How many times have we heard the term “sick building”. These sick buildings are just one of the many factors involved in making places distinctly uncomfortable and many are being built right into the suburban American home.
We all can rely on Feng Shui Tools to cope with a challenging world. The patterns of our environment must encourage us to be articulate and bold; they must bring us to life and liberate our thinking. Feng Shui is described as an art” and a “science. Two very separate words in our language but in Chinese the single character “shin” means both heart and mind. When the Chinese ask; “What is on your mind?” they are literally saying, “What is your heart thinking?” The filmmaker, the artist and the writer are among those who speak directly to the heart of knowing and we are swept away. The language of Feng Shui is also the language of the heart spoken with the crystal clarity of a quiet mind linked to all that has come before and all that will come after. There is a simple natural & harmonious magic to it to which we are all in tune if we can learn to listen. Just as a work of art moves us to a dimension that words cannot reach, the places we create can move us beyond the rational, the external and the objective to a place of meaning and reverence. So Feng Shui says; Trust what your heart is thinking.
